What is Mediterranean Pizza?
Mediterranean Pizza is less a single, traditional recipe and more a delicious concept that celebrates the fresh, intensely flavored ingredients found across the entire Mediterranean basin. While classic Italian pizzas famously rely on simple tomato bases (the Neapolitan standard) or are “white” (bianca) with just oil and cheese, the Mediterranean version ventures far beyond these borders. It draws inspiration from various coastal dishes, such as the French Pissaladière (a savory tart topped with caramelized onions, anchovies, and olives) or Turkish Lahmacun.
The key distinction is the use of non-traditional bases and toppings. Instead of a thick, acidic tomato sauce, a Mediterranean pizza often uses bright green pesto, creamy hummus, or, in our case, something even more unique: Muhammara. This is a rich, slightly smoky, and savory-sweet dip made from roasted red peppers, walnuts, and pomegranate molasses. It makes for an incredible, complex red sauce base! You could also easily swap in a jar of good quality red pepper pesto or even a vibrant green basil pesto for a fantastic result. It’s a way of celebrating the region’s diverse larder of vegetables, salty cheeses, and pungent aromatics.

How to Make Mediterranean Pizza
To get started on your vibrant Mediterranean Pizza, you’ll first need a great crust. You can follow my proven recipe for the perfect homemade pizza dough right here: Homemade Pizza Dough, or feel free to use your own favorite recipe or even a quality store-bought dough if you’re short on time—no judgment here!
The most crucial element for a crispy, non-soggy crust is heat. Preheat your oven to its highest setting (usually around 475∘F or 245∘C. If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven while it heats up; otherwise, use a sturdy, preheated baking sheet. While the oven is getting hot, you have enough time to roll out your dough and get your toppings ready. Once rolled, spread your muhammara or pesto base, arrange your chosen ingredients, and carefully slide the pizza onto the preheated stone or sheet. The intense heat hitting the bottom immediately is the secret to achieving that perfect, crisp lift in your crust!

What to Put on Mediterranean Pizza
The Mediterranean larder offers endless possibilities for toppings—think roasted red peppers, thinly sliced zucchini, marinated eggplant, or crumbled feta cheese. However, to truly let the muhammara base shine, we are keeping things simple and classic. We’ll be using a scattering of creamy, fresh mozzarella, salty black olives, halved sweet cherry tomatoes, and a few slivers of savory anchovies (optional, but highly recommended for an authentic salty kick!). The key is to avoid over-piling the toppings, allowing the fresh flavors to meld beautifully without weighing down the crust.
