How to Cook Chicken Wings

For many people, chicken wings are the best bit of the bird. I can’t honestly say they’re the healthiest of meals, which is why I don’t share them here so often. But oh boy! Whenever I eat them, I’m reminded of how delicious they are! Stick with me to find out How to Cook Chicken Wings that will knock your socks off.

About Chicken Wings

Chicken wings have a mix of white and brown meat which makes them juicy and tender. Plus the high ratio of chicken skin to meat means there’s a whole lot of crispy skin to get crunching on! Wings can be cooked in a single piece or separated in three pieces, called the drumette, wingette, and wing tip. I usually prefer not to separate them, but there’s no denying that it makes for slightly messier eating. But that’s just part of the fun…

If you need any more reasons to give them a try, they’re also incredibly affordable, often the cheapest cut of chicken meat there is. Oh, and if you’re looking for sides for chicken wings, I wrote a whole guide a while back!

How to Cook Chicken Wings

There are many different ways to cook chicken wings, but all of them have one aim in common: crispy, gooey, sticky chicken skin and succulent, tender meat. You can bake them or roast them, cook them on a BBQ or in a pan, or even use your air fryer. In general, chicken wings are best cooked for a shorter period at a high temperature, and you usually want to

1. Sticky Honey Garlic Wings

Soy sauce, ginger, and honey make for a deliciously sticky marinade for these wings. Add in sesame and garlic and you’ve got a winner. As a baked recipe, it’s also a bit more on the healthier side.

2. Pomegranate Glazed Chicken

I originally made this recipe with chicken drumsticks, but you could easily sub in wings for a crispier and equally delicious end result!

7. Peri Peri Chicken Wings

Peri peri is a popular African spice blend that packs a lot of punch. You can tone down the chili if you want, but I think the scorch is part of the pleasure, in these juicy wings, marinated for several hours.

8. Vietnamese Fish Sauce Wings

A wonderful crunchy coating with fried garlic, but it’s the pungent fish sauce that really makes these Vietnamese wings stand out. Serve with plenty of fresh limes to squeeze over.

9. Georgian Style Chicken Wings

That’s Georgia as in the Eastern European country on the Caucasus, not the US state of Georgia. The recipe uses a traditional Georgian chili ppaste called adjika and adds mayonnaise to the marinade.

10. Elote-Style Chicken Wings

This is a clever riff on elotes: classic Mexican corn-on-the-cob. The recipe takes chicken wings and treats them in the same way, with mayo, cotija cheese, chili, lime juice, and cilantro.

These wings are not blisteringly hot and spicy. Instead, they have a “warm and fuzzy” kind of heat, as writer Irena describes them. A good one for spice-skeptics.
