While I really like my desserts and sweets, lately I’ve been trying to set myself on a healthier road, adding less sugar and using more natural sweeteners like dates and honey.
I’ve also been playing around with healthier or unconventional flours like whole wheat, spelt, almond, and coconut. These changes are just some of the small steps I’m taking to keep my family healthier, while still cooking them delicious food.
Of course, I have been applying this to my love of fruit breads, which can often contain a lot of sugar. With all that fruit that is already inside, it’s a shame that they aren’t healthier. I had to do something about that and make some healthy fruit breads full of good-for-you ingredients that still appease my sweet-tooth.
I’m not the only one looking to keep things a little healthier now. So many other great food bloggers are catering to the increased demand for healthy bakes. They are switching sugar for natural sweeteners, all-purpose flour for whole grains and nut flours, oils for plain yogurt, and more. I’ve brought a bunch of my favorite healthy fruit bread recipes together for you.
I hate sacrificing flavor for health so I tried to include recipes that focus on both. Fortunately, many of the healthy substitutes bring some great flavors to the baked treats! I’m personally a fan of the nutty flavors that wholemeal flours bring to these loaves. Whether they have reduced or no sugar, alternative flours, or are low fat, these fruit breads are missing nothing in flavor.
You won’t find any refined sugars, artificial sweeteners (still not sure if these are healthy so I avoid using them) or all-purpose flour here. Just fruit, maybe some honey, maple syrup, or unrefined sugar, and lots of whole grains or wheat alternatives. And of course, great flavors!
